Ways to really make my hair look good with a curling iron with a clamp?

Every time i try and curl my hair it ends up looking short and not very together. Then i wonder how girls do it. Please help!!! I think if i could curl my hair correctly it would look really pretty, i am sick of my straightened hair all the time):
