Why do people think occultism works?

Is it nothing more than positive reinforcement? Or are people really so delusional to think that certain rituals will enable them to astrally project or curse people? Or is the occultism I am referring to just a childsplay version of meditative rituals that help people organize their thoughts and garner motivation?
